Username once again relevant. Jolene drove fine all the way home. I got there and tried to pop the radio out so I could get it to function, then my brother got home from work and recommended I just go to best buy and get a radio that would let me use bluetooth. It seemed like a better idea, so I put the key in and cranked.
Noooooooooooope. She’s not having it.
Remembering that it’s sometimes a hard start on a hill (both sides of the street by the driveway were taken already), I cranked again, this time giving it some gas.
Nooooooooooooope. Jolene, man, come on.
Went inside, grabbed my VAG-COM cable and laptop, away we go.
Today’s lucky numbers are: P0131, P0341, and P1128. P0131 is the pre-cat O2 sensor. That wouldn’t stop me. (In a previous post, I change that sensor and passed emissions. 200 miles later, it was fouled from running rich and the code came back.) P0341 is the hall effect sensor from the distributor, which has also been around forever. Again, not a pressing concern, though it pulls timing which may be the reason I fouled an O2 sensor.
Now, the P1128 is related to the Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. It’s time to look to the Bible.
“Yeah man, VWs are reliable.”
UPDATE: I rolled it out of the driveway and pushed it to the side of the road with my brother. I cranked and I cranked then cranked some more until it fired. It sounded like it was choking for a while, then started running as smooth as ever (ie, feather the gas when you want to idle). The leading theory is that the car is 22 years old and either the fuel pump or sending unit is weak. Whatever. I just won’t park on a hill.

ckauto is a click away.

You’ve just got the wrong attitude. Once you embrace how truly
fortunate
you are to be driving a VW, then all of your problems will fade in significance.

I have the Haynes and the Bentley.
If I have to use the Bentley, something is seriously wrong. And I will be making it worse.

I bet if you replace it with a classic Beetle it’ll be reliable....though slow and probably less comfortable! :P
There’s something to be said for simplicity!

I got the Haynes for three bucks at Autozone. Out of print, last copy in store. My coworker who has two VWs for double the reliability recommended I keep it in the bathroom in case I run out of TP. I gave it a skim and I agree with him. The parts that require more than a working brain to figure out say “take it to a professional.”

Oh I’m waiting. I know that if I buy one to keep around just in case, the one that works for now will instantly eat it.

Sad to hear that...I ended up using my Haynes (Passat/A4, circa 2000) FAR more than Bentley. The big book was thorough, but “academic” in a lot of aspects. The Haynes actually had real tear-down pics that helped me a lot more in most cases.
Bentley was often like:
1. Open hood
2. Remove engine
3. Reinstallation is the reverse of removal.

Yeah, the Bentley is academic for sure. The Haynes for this car is just a pile of crap compared to the Bentley though. It doesn’t even crack 200 pages.
I’m the Electrical Engineering intern at my company and the go to “hey this broke can you fix it?” guy, so I’m not worried about following a technical procedure.

I’ve only had this car for like a month. I’ve come to the conclusion that VW fans have stockholm syndrome. Sure, they’re decent to drive. But the interior isn’t great, the parts are expensive and break all the time, they don’t get incredible fuel economy, they aren’t exceptionally powerful, and they don’t look much better than any alternative.
Plus they require their own special diagnostic cable that costs like three hundred dollars used.
But for some reason, I love it. Still not even 2k deep.

The original Hot Hatch.

Right, but I have a base model Golf from 1996, not a GTI or a VR6.

I just grabbed an image that captured the era when my brother and I were into Veedubs.
